
As Ukraine enters its third year of defending against Russian aggression, the fight echoes America’s own struggle for independence 250 years ago. We must ensure that the beacon of freedom continues to shine, writes Ronie Berggren, Elias Linder, Dag Kirsebom, Dan Korn, Pelle Zackrisson, and Björn Norström.
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, seeking to resurrect a long-gone empire from darkness, President Zelensky of Ukraine did not flee; instead, he asked the world for ammunition to defend his country’s freedom.
Three long years have passed since that day. War is truly hell, and naturally, most people wish for this tragedy to end. But history has shown that one thing is worse than war: tyranny.
That was the premise on which America was founded, reflected in the words of Patrick Henry:
”Give me liberty or give me death.”
Western Europe has forgotten this lesson of history, but the people of Eastern Europe have not. They remember Russian tyranny from previous times and have no intention of turning back. That is why they’re fighting: not to prolong suffering, but to defend freedom for generations to come.
That is a very American response. Next year America celebrates its 250th birthday. In 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote in The Declaration of Independence:
”The history of the present King ... is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States”.
That was unacceptable for the freedom-loving people of America, so under the command of General George Washington, America fought. Since then, America has been a shining city on a hill, a beacon for every freedom-loving person and a light for every shadow of tyranny to fear.
In our times, 250 years later, Ukraine is fighting for the same freedom. The fight is their own but their hope lies in that the light of America will keep the shadows of tyranny at bay.
Let us work together, Europeans and Americans alike, as freedom-loving people all over the world by supporting Ukraine in every way possible in their 21st century fight for independence.
May we, in the words of President Donald J. Trump—’fight, fight, fight!’—for freedom and posterity, to ensure this light continues to shine in Ukraine and all over the world. If we stand together we will not fall but Make the West Great Again.
Let us once more heed the words from America’s founding:
”And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”
